Bad Brains/ Supreme

Bad Brains is an American Hardcore punk band formed in Washington, D.C. in 1977. Highly regarded as being among the pioneers of hardcore punk, though Bad Brains themselves have objected to the term “hardcore” to describe their music.

Originally formed as a jazz fusion ensemble under the name Mind Power, Bad Brains developed a very fast and intense punk rock sound, which was both musically complex and was often played faster and more emphatically than the music of many of their peers. They were also an adept reggae band, in a sort of Jekyll-and-Hyde arrangement, while later recordings featured elements of funk and heavy metal. Bad Brains are also notable as religious followers of the Rastafari movement.

Bad Brains broke up and reformed several times over the years, sometimes with different singers and/or drummers. The band’s classic and current lineup is singer H.R., guitarist Dr. Know, bassist Darryl Jennifer, and drummer Earl Hudson. Bad Brains has had a major influence on skate culture, therefore it was only natural for Supreme to join the band to produce a small capsule collection. Supreme will release a Vans Sk-8 HI in three colorways, harrington jacket, and two t-shirts.

Available at the NY and LA stores on April 24th. Japan will release the project on April 26th at the Daikanyama and Harajuku stores and April 27th at the Osaka and Fukuoka stores.

I don't get excited by electronic equipment very often.

launch of a new exhibition of
works by Artist,
Poet and Professional
Skateboarder,
Mark Gonzales.

Mark is a true legend
of skateboarding, often
described as the godfather
of modern skateboarding.
An iconic renaissance
man who over the years
has amassed a reputation
as an all round multi
media artist and has
exhibited internationally.

Mark will be here in
the UK to exhibit never
before seen works
including the latest
evolution of his Priest
character, the Megga
America Communion
Priest. In an edition
of 1000 these will be
exhibited, each piece
totally unique, hand
finished and customised
by Mark himself.

The previous incarnation
of this character, made
in collaboration with
Mo WAX Arts is
now a highly collectable piece
of Marks work. The full d
details cannot be revealed
yet but we can tell
you that Mark has definitely
made a big forward step
conceptually with
this piece. More information
and pictures of this
unique artwork will
be revealed very
shortly.

Plans are also underway
to publish a book featuring
photographs of each individual
figure, so as to fully
document Mark’s creative
process.

WK Interact @ dpmhi Exhibition and Book Launch

Exhibition: 7 September 23 October

The revolutionary street artist WK Interact has collaborated with the dpmi gallery in Soho to stage an exhibition of his work and celebrate the launch of his new book Exterior Interior Act 2. The installation in the uniquely shaped tall gallery features WK iconic monotone figures in motion and targets on the wall with two corresponding dart stands in the middle of the space. dpmhi also offers a range of WK products for sale including the Deluxe Book Boxset, made in collaboration with the artist. The Boxset, produced in a limited edition of 25, features both WK's Act 1 book and his recently published Exterior Interior Act 2 book, as well as 3 prints and a spraycan, all packaged inside a box painted and signed by the artist. Other WK products will be available at dpmhi including his: 'Rescue' canvas, 'Target 101' silkscreen print, series of seven prints (each limited to an edition of 101), Target Pack, and a selection of T-shirts.

Born in France, WK Interact has been based in New York since 1992. He made a name for himself with his large, black and white hand-painted characters in movement, stretched over buildings to interact with the streets of Manhattan. He has worked for a diverse range of clients including Visionnaire (1998), didas (1999), BMW (2000), Burton 2003), and Yamaha (2003), Medicom Toy (2005) as well as collaborating with Maharishi mhi in 2001 as a guest artist on clothing. Black Block, la Revue 02, et Tokyo Eat vous invitent au vernissage des expositions de Damien Mazières et Davide Bertocchi le Mardi 25 Janvier 2005 à partir de 20h au Palais de Tokyo.

Black block a dernièrement aménagé un espace mural destiné à accueillir les projets d’artistes contemporains. Cet espace accueille régulièrement des wallpaintings dont une déclinaison en forme de multiples est commercialisée par la boutique.

La programmation de cet espace parfois confiée à des curateurs invités s’ouvrira le 25 janvier prochain avec l’artiste Damien Mazières, présenté par Patrice Joly (pour la revue 02). L’artiste, dont la pratique s’organise notamment autour du wallpainting, réalisera un drapeau décliné sous la forme de bannière en édition limitée.

Cette inauguration sera l’occasion pour la revue 02 de lancer son prochain numéro en invitant l’artiste Davide Bertocchi. Le projet "Top 100" qui associe un bolide aux allures de formule 1 à la compilation de 100 hits composant la playlist idéale du monde de l'art donnera lieu à un événement spécifique qui a bénéficié de la collaboration curatoriale de Vérane Pina.

Le véhicule de Bertocchi se déplace de centres d'art en centres d'art à l'instar d'une véritable tournée. Au Palais de Tokyo, la pièce de l’artiste sera exposée du 25 janvier au 20 février tandis que le restaurant Tokyo Eat jouera dans le même temps et à la demande de ses clients les morceaux de musique choisis pour cette playlist par 100 curateurs et critiques d’art. Le soir du vernissage, Tokyo Eat offrira également un cocktail aux clients du restaurant rassemblés pour l’occasion.

A noter que cet événement s’appuie très fortement sur l’exposition de Liam Gillick à laquelle la revue 02 est associée en tant que partenaire de l’exposition qui s’ouvrira le 25 janvier 2005.
